Building Interpretive Signs
Learning Outcomes:
Science:
French Language Arts:
Objective: Students will plan and construct a structure to house an interpretive sign. Students will work in groups and revise their plan when necessary throughout the building process.
Materials:
measuring tapes
pencils
booklets with planning pages, glossary
branches
Lesson:
Students make work individually or in groups up to 3 students. Using precut branches of various sizes students will need to measure and decide which branches can be used to create a frame for an interpretive sign. They will have samples of signs to use to help measure. Twine will be used to attach and hang the branches.
Questions to consider:
Will the size and weight of branches impact how the sign will hang?
How will the placement of the twine impact how the sign hangs or how it can be viewed?
How does the number of strings used to hang the sign impact its position?
Think about how this relates to a balance scale.
Evaluation:
Oberservation, functionality of finished project, ability to revise design plans and make modifications.
Learning Outcomes:
Science:
- Compare two designs, identifying the relative strengths and weaknesses of each.
- Identify steps to be used in constructing a device or vehicle, and work cooperatively with other students to construct the device or vehicle.
- Design and construct several different models of a device and evaluate each model, working cooperatively with other students. Suggested evaluation criteria are identified under the Specific Learner Expectations, Reflect and Interpret.
